The AI Travel Agent: How to Plan and Manage a 3-Day Family Trip Using Only AI Tools
Travel planning usually involves a "Tabpocalypse": Expedia for flights, TripAdvisor for hotels, Yelp for food, and a messy Google Doc trying to hold it all together.
For the holidays this year, I ditched the browser tabs. I hired an AI Travel Agent.
My mission: Plan a 3-day family trip to Chicago (2 adults, 2 energetic kids) using only AI tools. I wanted to see if artificial intelligence could handle the three pillars of travel stress: booking, itinerary building, and crisis management.
Here is the exact workflow I used, and how you can replicate it to save 10+ hours of planning.

Phase 1: The Booking (Powered by Google Gemini)
The hardest part of booking isn't clicking "pay"; it's finding flights that match your schedule and budget.
I turned to Google Gemini (formerly Bard) because of its secret weapon: Extensions. Gemini can read my Gmail, check Google Flights, and look at Google Maps simultaneously.
The Prompt: "I want to take a family of 4 to Chicago from Dec 20-23. Find me non-stop flights from NYC departing after 10 AM (so we don't have to rush the kids). Also, find a hotel near the Magnificent Mile that has a pool and is under $250/night."
The Result:
- Gemini pulled real-time data from Google Flights, presenting three specific flight options with current prices.
- It found two hotels matching my criteria and—crucially—linked directly to their Google Maps entry so I could check the distance to the pool.
Time Saved: ~2 hours of browsing.
Pro Tip: Once you book, you can ask Gemini: "Check my Gmail for the confirmation emails and add these dates to my Google Calendar." It parses the messy emails and blocks out your schedule automatically.
Phase 2: The Itinerary (Powered by Roam Around)
Now that we are going, what do we do? I didn't want a generic "Top 10 Sights" list. I needed a plan that kept a 7-year-old entertained without boring the parents.
I used Roam Around (an AI tool built specifically for itineraries) and ChatGPT.
- The Tool: Roam Around (roamaround.io)
- The Prompt: "Create a 3-day family-friendly itinerary for Chicago in December. We love interactive museums and pizza. Avoid outdoor walking for more than 15 minutes at a time (it's cold)."
The AI Itinerary:
- Day 1: Arrival & Deep Dish Pizza at Lou Malnati’s (AI noted it has shorter wait times for lunch than dinner). Afternoon at the Museum of Science and Industry (specifically the U-505 submarine exhibit).
- Day 2: The "Indoor" Day. Shedd Aquarium in the morning, followed by the LEGO Store on Michigan Ave.
- Day 3: Breakfast at Yolk, then a quick visit to the "Bean" (Cloud Gate) before heading to the airport.
The Verdict: The AI correctly prioritized indoor activities for a Chicago winter trip. It even grouped activities geographically to minimize travel time (e.g., Aquarium and Field Museum are neighbors).
Phase 3: The Crisis Manager (Powered by Flighty)
The nightmare scenario: You are at the airport, and the flight is delayed. The airline app says "On Time," but the gate agent is whispering.
For this, I used Flighty. While technically an app, it uses machine learning and aviation data to predict delays hours before airlines announce them.
The Scenario: On our return trip, Flighty pinged me: "High probability of delay due to inbound aircraft late arrival."
The Action: The airline app still showed "On Time." Trusting the AI, I kept the kids in the comfortable airport lounge for an extra hour instead of rushing to a crowded gate.
The Outcome: The flight was delayed by 90 minutes. We spent that time eating snacks in comfort rather than standing in line.
Phase 4: The Packing List (Powered by PackPoint)
Finally, the question: "What do I pack?"
I used PackPoint, an AI-driven app that checks the weather forecast for your specific dates and generates a checklist.
The Setup: I entered "Chicago," "December," "Family," and "Swimming" (for the hotel pool).
The List:
It automatically added:
- Heavy coats (obviously).
- Gloves/Scarves.
- Lip balm and moisturizer (AI correctly predicted the dry, windy winter air).
- Swimsuits (which I almost forgot because it was snowing outside).
The Final Verdict
Can AI act as your travel agent? Yes.
- Gemini acts as your Booking Agent (Flights/Hotels).
- Roam Around acts as your Tour Guide (Itinerary).
- Flighty acts as your Air Traffic Controller (Logistics).
Total Planning Time: 45 Minutes. Stress Level: Managed.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
A: Yes, the basic version is free and generates excellent daily plans. There are paid tiers for more advanced customization, but for a 3-day trip, the free version is sufficient.
A: Not yet. Gemini finds the flight and gives you the deep link to purchase it, but you still have to enter your credit card details on the airline's site for security reasons.
A: Extremely accurate. It pulls data from air traffic control and inbound flight paths, often alerting you to delays 30-60 minutes before the airline sends an official text.
